MATT SUCICH / TALKING AT WALLS / 8 SONGS RECORDED LIVE TO NO ONE
out on streaming platforms November 15th, 2024
the first video for ALL THE SAME out Thurs., Sept. 26th
After the release of Holy Smokes in 2023, we started playing mostly trio and 4-piece shows. Guitar, bass, drums, and sometimes keys. I’ve never been one for making the live show identical to the record, but forcing yourself to eliminate certain studio elements and play the songs with a bit of recklessness is what makes a live performance live, and I wanted to share that…on a record. We’re not claiming to have invented the live album here, but I’m also not embarking on massive sold-out club tours with seemingly endless budgets for that sorta thing. With the resources we had at our disposal, and the varying schedules of some very down and supportive people, we flew the band and a small film crew from NYC to Nashville, and made a live record…to no one.
Originally thought up as a kind of “deluxe” addition to Holy Smokes, and a way to extend the lifespan of an album in this current short-attention-span-era, Talking At Walls has ended up becoming its very own thing. New life for existing songs! Between varying schedules, flight delays, and the human need for food and rest, we had a window of somewhere between 24-36 hours on an April weekend at The Real Tone Ranch in Nashville, TN, to capture live performances of some Holy Smokes tracks, a few older live-show-staples, and a new song…just for the hell of it. It makes for fun tongue-in-cheek branding to call this a “live record to no one” but in addition to tape, we captured the entire thing on film, so it’s technically a live record to everyone? (Talking At Walls will be streaming in full on November 15th, and videos will be released individually before and after.) The title, Talking At Walls, is pulled from the lyrics to Walking Song (off of 2021’s Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself) which is performed in this collection with a rhythm section for the first time ever. The electric arrangement of All The Same is arguably the reason this project exists at all, and Waste It, which featured background vocals from the wonderful Kathleen Edwards on the studio version, sees Kathleen returning again to take a verse. Also included in the track list are Montauk, Dog-Eared Page, After Life, Give Love, and a new song, Crazy Time To Be Alive. The band is Tim Lappin on bass, Bryan Bisordi on drums, and Paul Loren on keys/engineering/mixing. The film crew is Phil Sokoloff and Ian Havens. I hope your favorite Matt Sucich song is here, and I hope maybe it’s your new favorite version. Or maybe this is someone’s first impression of Matt Sucich altogether. I’d be more than okay with that. If you were sent this link and you’ve never heard of Matt Sucich, you can read some nice things that some nice people have said on this EPK page. Thanks for being here, and listening, and watching. - Matt Sucich
